About us The breathtaking Lopwell Dam on the upper tidal mark of the River Tavy is an excellent site for bird watching and walking. Located just 3 miles north of Plymouth and 7 miles from Tavistock, this wildlife haven is well worth a visit. Lopwell Dam is a designated Local Nature Reserve (LNR) covering an area of approximately 5 hectares.

The starting point is Lopwell Dam (map ref LR201 475649), which is just a short drive to the north of Plymouth - you could even cycle there if you're feeling energetic. Go through Tamerton.

Lopwell Dam - constructed in 1953 to boost Plymouth's water supplies - is a tranquil spot on the River Tavy. The surrounding area (a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Local Nature Reserve) is known today for its plentiful wildlife, attracted by a range of habitats: woodland, marshes - freshwater above the dam, saltwater below - and mudflats.
