Taper 1:100 9.10 SUNK KEYS A sunk key is a key in which half the thickness of the key fits into the keyway on the sheft and the remaining half in the keyway on the hub. Therefore, keyways are required both on the shaft as well as the hub of the mating element. This is a standard

A sunk key is a key that fits into keyways in both the shaft and the secured member in machinery. Sunk keys are sunk into the shaft for half its thickness, where the measurement is taken at the side of the key. There are six main types of Sunk keys: Rectangular sunk key Square sunk key Parallel sunk key Gib head key Feather key Woodruff key 1.

KEYS

Parallel sunk key: If no taper is provided on the rectangular or square sunk key, it is called parallel sunk key i.e. it is uniform in width and thickness throughout. It is used where the pulley, gear or other mating piece is required to slide along the shaft.

Tapered or rectangular are the most common shape of shaft key. They keyway which is a slot provided in hub of a gear, sprocket, pulley and various rotating power devices which can receive key. The slot in hub is cut on key seating machines by milling, shaping, broaching, slotting and planning.

This type of sunk key has a uniform height throughout the key at both ends. So it is named parallel keys. Tapered keys. Like parallel keys, this sunk key type doesn't have a uniform height, instead, they are tapered at the upper surface in the ratio of 1:100. So they are called tapered keys.

Taper 1:100 in a sunk key means that the key tapers by 1/100th of an inch for every inch of length. For example, if the key is four inches long, it will taper by 0.04 inches. This taper allows the key to fit securely in the mortise, providing a strong and secure connection between the shaft and the hub.

A key is usually made from steel and is inserted or mounted between the shaft and the hub of the component in an axial direction to prevent relative movement. Keyseat is a recess in the shaft, and the Keyway is the recess in the hub to receive the key and thus securely lock the component.
